Jonathan Hoogerbrug
GP, Senior Harkness Fellow and Clinical Informatician | Te Puna Hauora HiNZ member | CiLN Member
My name is Jono and I am passionate about people, technology and solving big problems in healthcare. I am a practising General Practitioner, Senior Harkness Fellow, and Clinical Informatician. I have over a decade of frontline clinical experience and experience in national governance roles and digital product design and delivery. As part of my recent Fellowship, I was based at Stanford University researching clinical leadership and artificial intelligence. In the heart of Silicon Valley, I was exposed to many of the exciting entrepreneurial start-ups in the healthcare space. Additionally, I explored the philosophy and practical application of leadership in top-tier institutions like the Mayo Clinic, Stanford Health, Intermountain Health and others (learn more at www.clinicalchangemakers.com). During New Zealand’s COVID-19 response, I was a senior advisor for the Auckland region and then the Ministry of Health and helped to deliver the national Board Clinical Management System (BCMS), the COVID-19 vaccination register (CIR), and the national pharmacovigilance system. I believe that leadership is an essential tool if we are going to realise the potential of Health Informatics in New Zealand. This requires enduring and meaningful relationships with stakeholders and clear and compassionate communication. During COVID I learned we can empower communities to solve their own problems through technology and from the US, we need to be bold with the challenges we take on. I would these lessons to the board. I have an MBChB, FRNZGP, a Dip Paediatrics, a Certified Health Informatician of Australasia (CHIA) and was previously awarded the National Primary Care ‘Integration’ award for research on remote consultation. It would be a privilege to bring my clinical, leadership and digital health experiences to the HiNZ board. Thank you for your consideration..

Karen Shaw
Clinical Informatics Manager | Te Whatu Ora Capital, Coast, Hutt Valley & Wairarapa Districts HiNZ member | CiLN Member
I would be honoured to be a member of the HiNZ Board. As a board member I would advocate for the development of strategies and activities that provide a framework for the development and support of todays and tomorrow clinical informaticians. I believe that clinical informaticians are a vital part of the success of digital health initiatives but that we need a professional framework and support resources to build greater capacity within healthcare in New Zealand. HiNZ is well placed to be an independent guiding light in this area.
I believe in the positive multidisciplinary and collaborative force for change that is clinical informatics and HiNZ. I will work on behalf of all clinicians towards the further development of this with HiNZ.
I bring a sound understanding of many of the challenges we face but also an openness to understanding and learning more about the challenges and concerns of our New Zealand workforce. I promise to listen and be open to new ideas and honest in my responses. I will try to lead with positivity and humility.

Kyle Forde
Chief Executive | Karo HiNZ member
It’s a pleasure to be nominated for a position on the HINZ Board 2024. I have made a career in Information Technology for much of my working life which has led me to several opportunities in the health sector. I have had experience in Primary Care, Social and Hauora Services, Telehealth, Data Management, Cyber Security, and strategic development at an executive level and believe my broad range of experience has a lot to offer the board and its membership. Over the past 10 years I have worked in senior leadership roles in Primary Care, Te Whatu Ora and currently in Karo as their Chief Executive. 2 years ago, I began my journey into the social sector to help Hauora providers link into digital services to enable better cross sector engagement.
The shared vision I have for HINZ is to help the organisation expand into more opportunities which link them into primary and community care including leading initiatives where they contribute to the national data and digital health strategy e.g. Data Standards in Primary and Community Care. I strive to foster new thinking in the health and social sector and continue to challenge the status quo with an aim to contributing to a landscape where digital services can enable those in the sector to provide better outcomes for the clients and patients they work with. I love the mahi I do daily with Hauora providers in the community and hope that my enthusiasm I bring to the board and the wider HINZ community can add value to the future of HINZ and its wider strategy.

Mark Shirley
Chief Innovation Officer | Habit Health HiNZ member | CiLN Member
New Zealand is a unique environment to trial new and exciting opportunities. I have seen this working across the public and private health sector and believe that with a collaborative approach we can have a digital health landscape that is the envy of the world. We are small enough to ‘get things done’ and large enough to make an impact.
I recognise that people in the health industry just get on with stuff – and we don’t often pause to celebrate or recognise the health, economic or societal impact we contribute to Aotearoa. One of my passions for data is using it to advocate for the recognition of excellence that our health practitioners achieve, especially when we work collaboratively in partnerships.
As Chief Innovation Officer at Habit Health, I am responsible for our digital health and innovation pathways. Habit Health is New Zealand’s largest integrated health, fitness, EAP and rehabilitation group. We directly employ over 800 people across New Zealand.
My clinical background is as a Physiotherapist with a Masters of Health Science from AUT and my undergraduate from Otago. In 2015 I started a private Allied Health business in Dunedin, Otepoti. We grew this to provide care across the South Island and eventually became part of Habit Health to provide a national service.
I have worked in many roles over the years both in public and private health and have a demonstrated history of strong business growth and development. I became a Member of the Institute of Directors in 2018 and remain actively involved as a Director within the health industry both in the private and not for profit health sectors. I also continue to have a small caseload in neuro-rehabilitation.
I love innovation, collaboration and have a passion for data driven healthcare.

I am deeply passionate about leveraging digital health and innovative technology to create positive change in communities. I have a unique background in business, Health Informatics and governance experience coupled with a pacific perspective of diversity thinking, a holistic world view and an inbuilt nature of togetherness.
I have founded and grown businesses, honed my skills in team leadership and operational management for the past 15 years. My entrepreneurial mindset has led me to establish social enterprises combating loneliness in adults and supporting the wellbeing of working women. I have also championed a non-profit community swim school and embarked on other ventures. Through these experiences, I have refined my skills in business strategy, finance and marketing.
For the last 6 years, I have been involved in the transformational change of moving to electronic patient health information within Te Whatu Ora Waitematā. This enables me to contribute an administrative perspective and knowledge in data quality, release of information and privacy and confidentiality to digital health innovations. Furthermore, I have a strong understanding of New Zealand legislation in this area.
Previously, I’ve held governance positions as a director and President elect of Takapuna North Rotary club and Head Coach of a swim club. As a current HiNZ Board Intern, I have gained valuable insights into the organisation's operations and further improved my governance skills. Steve Earnshaw
CCIO | Te Whatu Ora Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley HiNZ member | CiLN Member
Digital transformation is a key enabler for improving and changing the health sector. It is this that has motivated my transition over many years from a full-time clinical role to a full time clinical informatics leadership role. I believe that strong clinical leadership is essential if we are to effectively and rapidly change the health system. My background is in orthopaedic surgery. I completed my medical training in Sheffield, UK, studied for a doctorate in Nottingham and went on to complete my surgical training there also. I moved to Timaru, NZ in 2004 as an orthopaedic surgeon, but gradually moved into more leadership and management roles. I became Clinical Director for IT, and subsequently Chief Medical Officer. As CMO I led the formation of a South Island Clinical Informatics Leadership Team, and sponsored the Health Connect South Programme that rolled out a single clinical portal system for the 5 South Island DHBs, in addition to a number of other clinical ICT projects. I moved to my current role working across what were the three Wellington Region DHBs in 2019. As Chief Clinical Innovation Officer I have worked alongside the CDO to establish a 3DHB governance structure, create a digital strategy, and to strengthen clinical engagement. Key projects I have led in Wellington have included the Single Clinical Portal project to replace and consolidate the previous three separate old versions of Orion Concerto with a single updated portal. I am especially proud of having established and led our amazing multi-disciplinary clinical informatics team which now has 6 members from a diverse cross section of clinical backgrounds. I have been an active member of the CiLN Advisory Panel for several years, and have also been part of the NZ Telehealth Leadership Group. Outside of health I have a range of general governance and leadership experience. I am a member of the Institute of Directors, and have served on several boards in the commercial, public and charitable sectors.
I have enjoyed being a part of the HiNZ board for the past two years during which time we helped steer the organisation through some challenging times. I am excited about our new strategic direction and am keen to continue to serve as a board member as we start to execute our plans.
