Social Determinants of Health - a systems thinking approach
12:30pm to 1:30pm, Wednesday 25th May
Research exploring a holistic view of health outcomes in our communities suggests around 20 percent is attributable to care provided by the health system. The remaining 80 percent sits outside of the health system and together are called the ‘social determinants of health’.
The World Health Organisation identifies ten focus areas that contribute to these social determinants of health. This webinar focuses on one of these areas: water and its impact on people’s health and the health system. Panellists will also provide a Te Ao Māori lens and wider look at how social determinants impact Māori health outcomes.
This will be an exciting opportunity to explore and expand your thinking on holistic health outcomes and how data and digital are informing thinking in other areas that are connected to health.

Fiona Pimm Chairperson Te Runanga o Arowhenua
Fiona started her career as an MRT training in Christchurch Hospital. She transitioned to health management in primary care as the first employee of Pegasus Medical Group IPA. Fiona continued working in health management with a Ngāi Tahu focus on Māori health for a decade before moving across to DHB Management in Canterbury and South Canterbury.
Today Fiona is a professional director. Her roles include Chair for Whai Rawa Fund Limited, Careerforce ITO, Restorative Elective Surgical Services and NZ Blood & Organ Service; a Board member on Canterbury DHB and the Māori Health Authority; and the representative for Arowhenua (her rūnaka) on the Te Runanga o Ngāi Tahu Board.
Fiona wants to see greater health improvement for every health dollar spent. Such a metric requires robust data collection, analysis and interpretation. Her ideal data vision is to see health data integrated with data from other wellbeing services to enable wholistic assessment of whānau wellbeing and to be able to identify where investment will have the greatest overall benefit for each whānau.
