New cyber security eLearning supports primary care

Health New Zealand has developed new cyber security eLearning modules to support people working in primary care and the wider health sector.

The Protecting health data course was developed by Health NZ’s cyber security team, learning specialists, and a working group made up of people from across the primary care sector. This has helped ensure the content is practical, relevant and easy to use.

The two modules that make up the Protecting health data course focus on simple everyday actions that help protect health information, reduce everyday avoidable cyber risk and keep services running. They include topics such as recognising suspicious messages, using strong passwords, turning on multi-factor authentication (where available), keeping devices updated and knowing what to do when something goes wrong.

The Protecting health data course gives primary care and other health providers a ready-made, health-focused resource they can use to lift capability across their teams and is especially useful for smaller organisations that may not have the time, budget or resources to create their own training.

Organisations and individuals can use the training to build cyber security awareness and confidence, and to meet standard 2 of the security checklist for health service providers.

By making practical training available across the sector, we’re supporting stronger cyber resilience and helping protect patients, whānau, staff and services.
