Project Showcase Submissions

Submission Guidelines for Project Showcase

>> Download the submission template here <<

Digital Health CONNECT magazine is the official magazine of Health Informatics New Zealand (HiNZ). CONNECT is published as a digital edition, four times a year. To read more about the magazine please visit the CONNECT home page.

‘Project Showcase’ is a section of CONNECT magazine. Our use of the term ‘project’ in this context, means any project that relates to data or digital health innovation or implementation, including any research on digital health. If you are unsure whether your project is suitable for the magazine, please email Rebecca at editor@hinz.org.nz

All submissions will be reviewed by the Project Showcase section editor for suitability for acceptance. The 'Project Showcase editor role' will be performed by a HiNZ volunteer and HiNZ will ensure that this task is always performed by a suitably qualified health informatics expert. If your submission requires any changes before it can be accepted by HiNZ, you will be notified and given the opportunity to edit it. You may include references but they are not required for publication.

HiNZ reserves the right to make minor edits to submissions for clarity and brevity, to fit the space and style constraints of the magazine. You will be sent a proof of your submission after it has been put into our 'Project Showcase' design format. You will have three working days to make any changes to this before it is published. If you do not respond by the deadline, your submission will be published as-is.

If you have a question in relation to these guidelines, please email Rebecca at editor@hinz.org.nz

Word count

Submissions to Project Showcase should be a maximum of 600 words, so that your submission can fit neatly onto one page. Standard submissions are text only and include no images or charts. If you wish to expand your word count up to 1000 words; and/or add images and charts to your submission; please request a 'showcase upgrade'.

Read more about the upgrade options on the Showcase Upgrade page.

If you have a question about the word count or the upgrade options, please email Rebecca at editor@hinz.org.nz

Submission structure

Please structure your submission with the following components:

  • Title: Make it short but descriptive, so it is clear to the reader what your submission is about.
  • Summary or introduction: Provide/describe that ‘aha’ moment or problem this project addressed.
  • Body: Tell us what you did in a couple of paragraphs. What is the significance of the project? Why is it important and original? Using bullet points to break up your submission can be useful to catch the eye and pull the reader into the text.
  • Conclusion: What next? What are the implications for practice? What are the further research questions?
  • Author(s) names & affiliations: We need the full name, job title and organisation affiliation for the author, and any co-authors.
  • Contact person: Every submission requires one contact name and email address. This is to enable us to send you a proof to approve. And this name and email address will be published in the submission to enable CONNECT readers to contact you if they wish to know more about your project.

NOTE - if you quote someone in your showcase, you need to have obtained their permission to do so, prior to including their comments in your submission.

References are not required but can be included if you wish (they are not part of the word count). If you supply references please use Vancouver reference format and add them to the end of your submission. Do NOT embed them within the body copy. If your references are too long to fit on the submission page, HiNZ may elect to publish them in a references section at the back of the digital flipbook member edition, with a link from the submission page. If you have a question on the word count, please email Rebecca at editor@hinz.org.nz

The maximum word count for one page is 600 words. If you require more space or graphics within your showcase page, please request a 'showcase upgrade'. Read more about the upgrade options.

Download the submission template (the link is at the top of this page) then send your completed word document to Rebecca at editor@hinz.org.nz by the submission deadline. If you aren't sure whether your submission topic is suitable, please Rebecca at editor@hinz.org.nz for advice.

Style guidelines
  • Capitalise titles when they precede a person’s name (“Professor Joye Smith, says…”), but lower-case them when they follow the name (“Joye Smith, professor of…”). Make sure names and titles are complete and accurate.
  • When referring to an association, organisation, or business for the first time, use its full name, followed by its acronym in brackets. For example, “Health Informatics New Zealand (HiNZ). In subsequent references, either use the acronym or say “the association”.
  • Spell out the numbers one through ten, from 11 on, use Arabic numerals. Use Arabic numerals for addresses and dates.
  • In numbered addresses, use the abbreviations St., Rd., Ave., and so forth.
  • Separate or highlight key points with numbered or asterisked (*) lists.
  • Use the serial comma (for example, “red, white, and blue” — not “red, white and blue”).
  • Do not embed references within your body copy - add them at the end of the submission.

How to view your submission in published form

Digital Health CONNECT magazine has TWO editions:

  • Digital Flipbook member edition - includes ALL accepted Project Showcase submissions
  • Digital Flipbook public edition -  includes the upgraded Project Showcase submissions

After publication, we automatically email you a one page PDF of your submission in the magazine design style, with a 'confirmation of publication letter' from HiNZ, for your portfolio.

If you chose the FREE standard submission, then your Project will be published only in the member edition of the Digital Flipbook. To view this edition, you need to be a HiNZ member. HiNZ memberships are available from only $17 per month. There is no minimum membership term and you can cancel anytime. To read more about HiNZ membership please go to our JOIN page.

If you purchased a submission Upgrade, then your project will be published in both digital editions of CONNECT. You can view your submission anytime in the open-access Public edition.

If you have questions about the various editions of CONNECT, or the upgrade options, please email Rebecca at editor@hinz.org.nz
