Digi-physical healthcare provider Tend Health has entered into an agreement to buy the medical division of Green Cross Health Limited, integrating 65 medical centres operating under The Doctors brand onto Tend's technology platform.
This will expand Tend's patient base by more than 400,000 registered patients, bringing the combined network to over 550,000 patients across 90 clinics throughout New Zealand.
Launched in 2020, Tend describes itself as a ‘digi-physical’ provider of care. Fifteen of its 25 current clinics use its technology platform, which centres around an app where patients can book video consultations, access their medical records and get repeat prescriptions online.
The transaction has backing from iwi investors, with Ngāi Tahu Holdings increasing its shareholding in Tend and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei also expanding its stake. New shareholder Nāti Growth and existing shareholder Ahuahu Group are joining the investment group, making iwi investors one of Tend's largest shareholder groups.
James Robinson, co-chief executive and co-founder of Tend Health says the transaction maintains local ownership of primary care infrastructure, "while continuing to build a long-term healthcare business focused on supporting access, improving patient health outcomes and sustainable primary care”.
Todd Moyle, chief executive of Ngāi Tahu Holdings, says his organisation is excited to support a New Zealand-owned business building a technology-enabled platform.
"Over the past few years, Tend has continued to invest in technology that supports primary care, with a focus on improving access, patient experience and continuity of care," he says.
Lisa Davis, chief executive of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, says, “we see primary care as critical social infrastructure, and this proposed acquisition reflects our commitment to long-term investments that are responsive to the needs of whānau, communities and patients across the motu”.
The transaction is subject to Green Cross Health shareholder approval and is expected to complete by 31 July 2026.
Patients will continue to be cared for by their existing clinical teams and medical centres and until completion, both businesses continue to operate as usual.
