Health informatics New Zealand (HiNZ) and the Digital Health Association (DHA) are bringing together government, clinical, health provider, iwi and industry leaders on May 12 in Wellington to explore the future of healthcare delivery in Aotearoa.

The Digital Health Leadership Forum will address themes including government procurement transformation, clinical leadership development, iwi-led innovation, cross-agency collaboration, and artificial intelligence readiness across New Zealand's health sector.

It features keynote addresses from associate minister of health Casey Costello on government priorities for health system transformation, and closing remarks from Madeline Newman, executive director of the AI Forum, on preparing for artificial intelligence in healthcare.

"This forum represents the type of collaborative leadership approach needed to navigate complex health system challenges whilst leveraging digital technologies to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders,” says Stella Ward, DHA chief executive.

Louise Zacest, chief executive of Nurse Maude, will deliver a  keynote on "How the baby boomers will disrupt healthcare delivery," addressing demographic challenges facing New Zealand's health system.

Wider government transformation will take centre stage with Myles Ward, deputy government chief digital officer and deputy secretary digital services, presenting on all-of-government transformation and service design.

Michael Alp, general manager of NZ government procurement, will outline the shift to all-of-government technology procurement and its implications for health sector organisations.

The forum will also feature presentations and a panel discussion with Michael Dreyer, deputy chief executive for technology and data at ACC, Tracy Voice, deputy chief executive for transformation at MSD, and Stuart Bloomfield, chief data and digital officer at Health NZ.

Privacy Commissioner Michael Webster will address issues around patient privacy and Michael Rongo, director of health at Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira, will present on community-driven solutions and by-Māori-for-Māori innovation approaches.

Clinical digital health leadership will also be a key focus area, with perspectives from Lara Hopley, chief clinical digital modernisation officer at Health New Zealand's new Centre for Digital Modernisation in Health, and Alex Kazemi, clinical director of the intelligence directorate at the National Public Health Service.

A quickfire session from industry leaders and entrepreneurs features Gabe Ripjma from CardioNexus; Angela Lim from Clearhead; James Daniell at McCrae Tech; Jono O'Sullivan-Scott from Heidi and Noor Syed from Microsoft.

HiNZ chief executive Alex Kemp says the forum's comprehensive programme demonstrates the breadth of leadership required for digital health advancement, spanning government policy makers, clinical leaders, health executives, iwi representatives, privacy regulators, and industry innovators.

“With New Zealand's health system undergoing significant transformation, the collaboration between HiNZ and the Digital Health Association provides a platform for cross-sector dialogue and coordination on digital health priorities,” she says.
