SECTOR UPDATE - HL7 New Zealand

HL7 New Zealand announces “The Business of Interoperability,” an executive program designed to address the critical business challenges and opportunities surrounding standards-based healthcare interoperability. The event will take place on October 7, 2025, at the Deloitte offices in Central Auckland.

This exclusive afternoon brings together senior leaders from HL7NZ member companies and other health IT stakeholders for strategic discussions on the business case, value proposition, and implementation challenges of investing in standards-based interoperability, with particular focus on the HL7® FHIR® (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standard.

“FHIR® makes it much easier to share health data, which can improve quality and reduce costs. But healthcare organizations across New Zealand are grappling with the business realities of interoperability investment. Who goes first? Who reaps the benefits?” said John Carter, HL7NZ Chair. “This program creates a forum for industry leaders to collectively discuss the challenges of coordinated adoption and identify ways to work together and with Health New Zealand for digital transformation.”

The program will feature keynote remarks from Grahame Grieve, FHIR® Product Director and the principal architect of the FHIR® standard. Grieve will provide insights into the global trajectory of FHIR adoption and address business implementation considerations specific to the New Zealand healthcare context. “FHIR® is maturing and it’s been proven in implementations around the world. In this session I’ll focus on how FHIR® and other standards can accelerate sector-wide digital transformation,” says Grieve.

Participants will also hear remarks from Deloitte Partner Damian Harvey, and HL7NZ Platinum Sponsor HealthLink.

Following the presentation, participants will engage in facilitated discussions and Q&A sessions designed to capture diverse industry perspectives on interoperability investment challenges and opportunities.
