Karl Metzler is CEO of Gore Health Ltd, the company responsible for managing the delivery of health services at a Community Owned Not-for-Profit rural hospital and integrated health facility in Eastern Southland. Gore Health currently employs approximately 130 people who are committed to serving the local community’s health needs. Gore Health generates roughly 50% of its own revenue through Primary and Oral Health Services as well as being the largest Molemap franchise in New Zealand.
Karl is also seconded to the Southern DHB’s Executive Leadership team two days per week and is Director of Telehealth for Southern DHB, and on the Primary & Community Strategy Steering Group. He is also Chair of the NZ Institute of Rural Health, and is a member of the NZ Health Workforce Advisory Board. In 2016 Gore Health was awarded the Otago-Southland Westpac Not for Profit Business of the year accolade and Karl the Business Personality of the Year.
Karl is very familiar with the challenges of delivering healthcare in a rural community and his innovative approach to healthcare delivery has seen several new technological and workforce initiatives aimed at alleviating some of the many issues facing rural healthcare being piloted at Gore Health. Gore Health in partnership with Auckland University was a world first test site for the deployment of Health Care Robotics to assist an Ageing in Place strategy for Older People. Gore Health were also the first Emergency Department in NZ to trial Physician Associates from the U.S.A, and continue with this highly successful workforce initiative today.
