Perspectives on Māori Data in a Health Data Ecosystem
Interest in Māori data sovereignty and the need for a process for Māori data governance are increasingly being recognised as an essential need in agency, health, and community collectives. This presentation will provide an introduction and perspectives on Māori views of data and the state of key Māori data work streams and governance. The impact of a broadly connected health data ecosystem will also be reviewed, and the challenges facing organisations in relation to their Te Tiriti o Waitangi responsibilities and opportunities for authentic Māori partnerships will also be discussed. This presentation will also go through an example of the application of Māori Data Sovereignty in a project and how Māori data governance worked. The all-important lessons learnt, and next steps will also be covered.

Daymon is a member of the executive team at Whānau Tahi, and leads the design and implementation of systems for Iwi, Urban Māori, and other indigenous groups internationally. He brings culturally involved design thinking for technology, people, and practices, as well as expertise in Maori Data Sovereignty and Governance practice. He has advised organisations and indigenous groups in Australia, USA, South-East Asia, Africa, and the UK. Daymon’s background has also included scaled ERP system implementations, solution architecture, outcome measurement, and organization change. Daymon has also been recognised for his work in the advancement of Māori Enterprise.
