Mastering electronic documentation: key tips for success


Implementing new systems and processes in healthcare is a challenge. When the change involves a computer there seems to be a heightened level of ‘panic’ - especially for nurses.


The recent implementation of an electronic patient record within Southern Cross Hospitals found that most of the fears are ‘perception’ and not ‘reality’ and are generally unfounded. Nurses – you CAN do it – even if you think you can’t!!


Nurses and anaesthetic technicians were key to the success of the Southern Cross Hospitals’ Clinical Workstation implementation. Even those who truly believed they had absolutely no computer skills quickly moved to confidently and competently using the system every day for every patient.


In this presentation, Carey will share the inside scoop on this transformation and provide some handy hints and key pointers for nurses so they too, can be successful, confident and competent in the area of health informatics.

Carey is the Chief Nurse Advisor for the Southern Cross Hospitals network of 10 hospitals that are geographically spread from Auckland to Invercargill. She is the clinical lead for the organisation’s Clinical Workstation project which includes the development and implementation of an electronic patient record.


Carey is a member of the Clinical and Technical Advisory Group (CTAG) of HINZ and Orion Health’s National Clinical Advisory Group.
