Movers and Shakers – April 2023

This latest round-up of Movers and Shakers in digital health includes the appointment of five new senior leadership roles at Te Whatu Ora data and digital. Two of the remaining roles, head of integration and head of data services, have yet to be filled.

Lloyd McCann
Lloyd McCann has joined Tāmaki Health as chief executive, after a decade with Healthcare Holdings Limited, holding positions across MercyAscot Hospitals, Mercy Radiology and Clinics and other entities

During this time, McCann and the team worked on several digital initiatives and solutions including; integrated PAS/EMR, robotic workers, diagnostic AI, patient online bookings, patient portals (secondary care), advanced data analytics and visualisations and more.

The value-based healthcare pathways the team developed and deployed over this time also leveraged digital solutions to enable integrated care using multi-disciplinary teams.

McCann says he is excited to join the Tāmaki Health team where the opportunity to work in primary and community care presents many opportunities and challenges.

“Digital Health and digital solutions will play a significant part in enabling new models of care within this component of the sector and continuing to drive integration across the sector more broadly,” he says.

James AllisonJames Allison
James Allison has been appointed director of ICT (chief technology officer) at Te Whatu Ora, data and digital.

Allison is currently interim regional data and digital lead Te Waipounamu, and prior to that was chief digital officer for Waitaha Canterbury and Te Tai o Poutini West Coast.

Interim chief data and digital Stuart Bloomfield says Allison has a proven track record of operational stability, programme delivery, and commercial stewardship and an impressive background in digital leadership roles in both corporate and healthcare settings.

“As part of this role he will help to develop a culture of connectedness and continuous improvement for systems and services across the motu that enable our health colleagues to deliver better care,” Bloomfield says.

Darren DouglassDarren Douglass
Darren Douglass has been appointed director strategy and investment at Te Whatu Ora, data and digital.

Douglass is currently GM digital strategy and investment at Te Whatu Ora and was previously group manager digital strategy and investment at Manatū Hauora Ministry of Health

Interim chief data and digital Stuart Bloomfield says Douglass has a wealth of experience of strategic leadership, investment portfolio management and digital service delivery within the health sector both here and in the UK.

“He will provide strategic thought leadership to support the development of Te Whatu Ora data and digital strategies and roadmaps, leveraging business partnership arrangements,” Bloomfield says.

Michael DreyerMichael Dreyer
Michael Dreyer has been appointed director sector digital channels at Te Whatu Ora, data and digital.

Dreyer is general manager of national digital services and chief technology officer at Te Whatu Ora and prior to that held the same role at Manatū Hauora.

Interim chief data and digital Stuart Bloomfield says in his announcement that Dreyer is a seasoned leader dedicated to delivering digital solutions for the betterment of New Zealanders.

“In this role, Dreyer will provide leadership, delivery and support of sector digital channels, including health consumer and whānau products, and population health and collaboration platforms and services.”

Lara HopleyLara Hopley
Lara Hopley has been appointed chief clinical informatics officer (CCIO) at Te Whatu Ora, data and digital.

Hopley is a specialist anaesthetist and was formerly clinical advisor to digital innovation at the former Waitemata District Health Board. She engaged in multiple regional projects including electronic orders, regional repositories for results and documents, and eReferrals with a focus on eCommunication between primary and secondary care.

Hopley says she is “excited” to take on the new role and there will be a lot to do.

“By establishing this role, our leaders have endorsed the idea that we need to build bridges between informatics, clinical medicine and management,” she says.

George SmithGeorge Smith
George Smith has been appointed general manager business support, Te Whatu Ora, data and digital.

Smith joins the team from the Northern region shared data and digital service, healthAlliance, where he was GM of corporate services.

In that role, he supported governance and board processes, managed the region’s IS oversight groups, and led strategy, planning and performance, risk, audit, privacy, communications, and facilities functions.

“In his new role, Smith will lead board sub-committee and governance processes, along with our reporting, decision support, and managing the integration points with other directorates and enabling functions,” says interim chief data and digital Stuart Bloomfield.

Pieta BrownPieta Brown
Pieta Brown has joined Deloitte as a director in the artificial intelligence and data consulting practice. Her role involves supporting customers to deliver real outcomes with data science, with a focus on the public sector.

Brown was previously product director for machine learning at Orion Health responsible for data science services, the New Zealand Algorithm Hub solution and Smart Coder product.

“There is a significant opportunity in Aotearoa to support decision making, cost effectiveness, strategy and customer experience with data science in a way that is safe and focused on equity. In many ways we’re still at the beginning of this journey, and I’m really motivated by the opportunities ahead of us,” she says.

Glynis SandlandGlynis Sandland (Ngāpuhi me Ngāti Hine)
Glynis Sandland (Ngāpuhi me Ngāti Hine) is the new chief executive of Whakarongorau Aotearoa.

She joined Whakarongorau Aotearoa as chief operating officer in June 2022. In that role she oversaw Whakarongorau Aotearoa’s operations, for the 30+ free to the public health, mental health, family violence, and sexual harm telehealth services across digital channels.

Sandland was acting chief executive for three months while Andrew Slater was on sabbatical and Slater has now taken on the role of chief people officer at Te Whatu Ora.

She has experience with large, complex, and dynamic organisations such as Auckland Council, and Westpac, and Oranga Tamariki.

Andy TurleyAndy Turley
Community and social care software provider Noted has appointed Andy Turley as its chief executive

Board chair, Steve Boomert, says Turley brings strong leadership skills and international experience in the health technology sector including executive roles at Lyniate (USA), Orion Health and Microsoft.

Turley says, “I am incredibly excited by the kaupapa of Noted, and what they’ve achieved so far, with a clear focus on the people providing whānau-centred care in the community, I’m proud to be helping them to deliver more equitable outcomes across Aotearoa.”
