SECTOR UPDATE - Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora
Health New Zealand has successfully launched a new Emergency Response module at Whangārei Hospital, replacing traditional pagers and overhead alerts with a secure, real-time mobile system.
The system gives emergency teams instant visibility and enables faster, more coordinated responses to critical events. Alerts are sent directly to mobile devices, helping ensure the right staff are mobilised immediately and departments are aligned during high-pressure situations.
This work supports Health New Zealand’s focus on improving emergency department performance, including its target for 95% of ED patients to be admitted, discharged, or transferred within six hours. The real-time emergency alert system streamlines communication - reducing delays, supporting staff on the ground and enhancing patient safety.
“This is a major step forward in how we manage emergency communications,” said Megan Milmine, Regional Director - Northern Region, Digital Services at Health New Zealand. “The rollout at Whangārei reflects the strength of collaboration between our clinical and digital teams. It’s exciting to see technology delivering tangible benefits for staff and patients.”
Dr Greg Williams, Director (Medical & Community) Starship Hospital, and Senior Responsible Officer for the project added: “Responding to emergencies in our hospitals is mission critical. We’re really grateful to our clinical and operational teams who have worked closely with us to make this as reliable and easy to use as possible. It is great seeing those teams now benefitting from all that hard work.”
The Emergency Response mobile system will be introduced at eight more hospitals across the Northern Region in the coming months. This wider rollout supports Health New Zealand’s commitment to modernising hospital operations, improving care delivery, and building safer, more efficient environments for both staff and patients.
