Initially available to practices within the Tū Ora and Health Hawke’s Bay PHO networks, the app is expected to expand across the Te Ikaroa region. Powered by Webtools’ Centrik platform, Tō Mai will be available as an option for practices within both networks, which currently totals over 517,000 enrolled patients across 79 practices.

This launch reflects an innovative partnership focused on enhancing patient outcomes and practice efficiency through modern, user-friendly technology. Unlike traditional portals, Tō Mai offers greater flexibility and functionality, shaped through a co-design process involving both patients and healthcare professionals. Webtools and participating practices are committed to continuous improvement, using feedback from user focus groups to guide ongoing feature development and address real-world needs.

“Tō Mai means to pull towards me, to pull together, to source—and that reflects exactly what we’re aiming for,” says Matthew Lord, Chief Information Officer at Tū Ora and Health Hawke’s Bay. “It’s part of our broader strategy to equip patients and practices with modern digital tools to make accessing health services and information faster and easier. These kinds of experiences are standard in other industries, and our patients and practices deserve the same.

“Webtools provides a strong platform to deliver this, improving efficiency, enhancing the patient experience, and laying the groundwork for continued innovation. This partnership is one of several digital advancements we’re making to raise the baseline of health technology”.

Tō Mai offers patients a mobile-friendly, intuitive platform to manage appointments, request and pay for prescriptions, receive reminders, message their care team, and attend video consults—all designed to give individuals greater control over their healthcare. These features are just the beginning, with more to come as the app evolves.

For general practices, Tō Mai provides a scalable, interoperable solution built on HL7 FHIR standards, enabling seamless integration with labs, pharmacies, and community care. This reduces administrative burden and enhances patient engagement. Webtools collaborates with users to address real-world pain points and issues, adapting to the world around it.

“This is not just about launching a new app—it’s about transforming how people access and experience healthcare,” says Al Duncan, Chief Growth Officer at Webtools. “Tō Mai combines strong partnerships, thoughtful design, and proven technology to empower patients, support practices, and reduce system friction.”

Through this collaboration, and the Spark Health Innovation Fund, Tū Ora and Health Hawke’s Bay are advancing public health outcomes, practice sustainability, and data-driven planning—building a smarter, more connected, and equitable future for digital health in Aotearoa.
