SECTOR UPDATE - Workday

Workforce shortages, supply chain disruptions, and systemic financial pressures are the three key trends impacting healthcare systems around the world, says Workday Global Head of Healthcare Strategy John Kravitz.

Kravitz was addressing the 220-strong audience at the HiNZ Digital Health Leadership Summit held in Wellington on May 14-15 2024, where the majority of the audience indicated they were experiencing all three of these pressures.

“These three trends are touching the business and whether it's human resources, or it is financials, it is really important that we have solutions out there that can help to minimise the friction,” he said.

Kravitz worked in the provider space for many years before joining Workday so has experienced these issues himself and now works to offer solutions to other providers to streamline backoffice functions.

“As CIO my job was to bring in new technologies or new ways of doing things that would eliminate friction in the organisation so that providers are not stressed and getting burned out and have the tools to do their jobs more effectively,” he told the Summit.

He said streamlining backoffice operations makes the job of clinicians easier and frees up time to deliver quality patient care.

The Workday solution includes enterprise resource planning solutions for financials, human resource, payroll, and rostering, as well as advanced planning, strategic planning, and cost accounting.

Workday provides a single mobile app for all of these applications, making things much simpler and cleaner for users.

He gave the example of Sharp HealthCare in the United States, which is synonymous with pioneering certain medical treatments and processes including robotic cancer automation using DaVinci robots, as well as gene therapy and radiation suites.

However, they had an issue around controlling spending on supply chain items. By introducing the Workday strategic sourcing product they were able to remove $4.2 million from their annual operating expense within the first six months of deployment.

“Transform your back office: it's a strategic enabler that has a really have a positive impact on the front end and the job of the clinicians,” he said.

“The best way to move forward is to consider a platform approach as it streamlines process, removes a lot of the clutter and cost in the organisation and really provides the opportunity to move forward efficiently.”
