Dedalus, the third largest electronic medical record (EMR) vendor in the world, this week launches Europe’s leading solution into the New Zealand health market.

ORBIS is a comprehensive and holistic hospital information software system that is already operating in more than 1,000 hospitals across Europe, and is the number one EMR provider in Germany and France.

It is being launched simultaneously in New Zealand and Australia with the release being led by Kiwi Steven Parrish, Dedalus’ chief medical information officer.

“It’s exciting to be able to be part of bringing a new option to New Zealand. It’s an opportunity to drive a difference for the New Zealand people.”

“An EMR must enable collaboration with partners in the health ecosystem – not create data silos and barriers. ORBIS is a next generation EMR that connects systems, data and people, combatting the issue of a patient’s individual care being provided across multiple organisations and settings, often at the same time without full insight and cohesive treatments.”

ORBIS comes from a socialised medicine background. It's built on workflow and user experiences rather than a billing model that is favoured by the United States. It offers mobility, ensuring that the clinician can utilise the system where they are, and not have to go outside of the clinical environment.

With ORBIS, relevant data is captured at the point of care and made available in real-time to support the planning, monitoring, reporting and billing processes. This significantly increases the value of the EMR to the organisation by making it a tool that supports the immediate management of the hospital and significantly improves user experience.

Steven ParrishBorn in Taupo, Parrish has decades of expertise in healthcare and was previously Chief Information Officer of the Taranaki District Health Board for five years and sat on a number of regional and national forums. He understands the nuanced differences in health care between the two countries, and believes it is the perfect solution that can be tailored to New Zealand’s healthcare needs.

“When it comes to electronic medical records, the core functionality – the orders, results and clinical documentation – is very similar. There could be differences between metro and rural hospitals in New Zealand because of staffing levels, for example, however those changes can be made through configuration, working with the customer,” Parrish says.

ORBIS covers all clinical and administrative use cases such as high-dependency care (including emergency, OR and ICU), regular care (including nursing), medication, scheduling and care coordination and patient administration.

It consists of more than 40 fully-integrated clinical modules, that cover all processes within and around the daily business of healthcare providers.

ORBIS has pre-configured clinical content, workflow and forms and digitally supports medical and nursing workflows. WebPAS is Dedalus’ strategic PAS solution that underpins ORBIS administration capability to support seamless managerial and administrative workflows and allow organisations to focus on clinical processes.

“Within the ORBIS toolkit we have Composer, which allows us to configure the system for different markets and even different organisations within the same market, to enable those small workflow differences in different hospitals.

“We want to make sure that implementing an EMR is a positive experience. For all implementations we propose a model that starts six months after going live with the system, where we have a combined team that continuously optimises the solution to better meet the needs of the customer and their clinicians.”

Hosted on the public Cloud, the software includes Clinalytix, a data collection and representation layer that features AI components to inform the clinician and caregivers about what is happening with the patient, what needs to happen, how the system's working, where the gaps are on the system.

Dedalus has more than 30 years of user experience, incorporating a wealth of insights and innovation and already has contracts with the Ministry of Health – including MedChart, WebPAS, i.PM and iPharmacy – so it works with any hospital or healthcare entity that offers pre hospital, hospital care and post hospital care.

With so much change in the New Zealand health sector, Parrish believes ORBIS is a future-focussed solution that has the capacity to meet the country’s ever-growing needs, and is far better than migrating historical practises into a digital format.

“EMR optimisation is a key component of anything that we do. Often providers do it once and walk away. EMR is like a plant it needs constant watering and feeding to get the most out of it otherwise it will impact on clinical use and clinical outcomes and therefore patient outcomes,” Parrish, a former nurse for 10 years, says.

“We have a very strong footprint in New Zealand, with 30 years’ experience, and we offer support in New Zealand from New Zealand, supplemented by staff in Australia and some overseas geographies too.

“We want to help New Zealand moving forward.”
