SECTOR UPDATE - Dedalus

Dedalus Healthcare, one of the world’s leading healthcare software providers and a major partner to New Zealand’s public and private hospitals, has embarked on a program of investment in local talent, creating a New Zealand-based MedChart development and test team which will act as a bridge to the company’s large research and development capacity within its Global Development Centres.

This significant investment reflects Dedalus’ commitment to NZ Health and the New Zealand Medications Management market, while also demonstrating the company’s intention to grow its presence in the region and willingness to invest in its people to achieve that growth. Currently, Dedalus supplies 19 out of 20 District Health Boards with its ePharmacy pharmacy management solution and helps to reduce harm from adverse drug events across 4,500 public hospital beds with its ePrescribing and end-to-end electronic medication management platform MedChart.

To meet growing demand in the ANZ region for the MedChart medications management solution, Dedalus has established a team of development and test engineers in its Wellington office. This team will augment the large global development network based in Chennai as well as the global product team spread across New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

The Wellington-based team currently has five full-time employees, comprised of 3 developers, a test analyst, and a business analyst. Dedalus will consider further expansion in the future if this model drives notable improvement in both product delivery and customer satisfaction.

Creating the global development team in New Zealand addresses many of the time zone limitations of having all manufacturing in a single time zone. Having a more extended working day window enables support issues to be addressed and progressed in a much shorter timeframe than had previously been possible. This move is the first of what will likely be a number of new and exciting initiatives that Dedalus will unveil this year.

Our clients in the region will also benefit in a number of ways from having some of the key technical product resources based close to the regional market that consumes the product. For example, greater visibility and the ability to be involved in client meetings and workshops is now possible for ANZ-based activities. A recent implementation of MedChart at Northern Beaches Hospital in New South Wales demonstrated just what could be achieved by bringing both the customer and key vendor development resources together.

“It’s amazing what you can build with your developers and a solution’s expert in the room with you,” Ms. Richardson said. “It was a most satisfying, productive work environment because we could see the progress happening together, and it resulted in a very rapid build, which was so important given our tight timeline for go-live.”
