NEWS - Mat Bailey, intensivist, Hawke's Bay DHB

Mat BaileyCould you explain what your role entails?
I’m a full time intensivist, and until recently have been involved in the roll out of the Orion Clinical Portal product in Hawkes bay and the broader central region.

What parts of digital health interest you the most?
Systems which either facilitate best/ better practice, or which offload work from clinicians at the coal face.
Supporting research and audit
Better quality data and use of that data to better understand the needs of our services and populations.

What projects are you currently involved in?
An artificial intelligence project to identify correct donning and doffing behaviour

If you could have any other job, what would it be?
I kind of like the one I have, and I suspect I will be a very busy intensivist in the next few months - depending on how many get their COVID jab! Failing that, I’d be a clinical IT geek type leading the rollout of an ICU system for NZ.

If you have one piece of advice for other digital health leaders, what would it be?
Health NZ presents a real opportunity to pause and rethink our IT strategy at a national level. Now is the time to regain our thoughts, learn from history and work out what we want from our future IT systems.

What’s your favourite piece of technology at home and why?
Hmmm - try to avoid them as much as possible.

Who would you like to play you in a film?
Batman!!! Always be yourself, unless you can be BATMAN
