Northern region telecommunications go digital

SECTOR UPDATE - healthAlliance

Telecommunications at the Northern Region DHBs have gone digital. 

The region reached a major technology milestone recently when it switched its telecommunications infrastructure over to a new, modern digital network. All voice traffic across the majority of hospitals and community sites has been successfully migrated from old copper lines to a single data network, consolidating 52 PABXs in the process and finally doing away with faxing in favour of digital at most sites. 

Spark and Chorus have been decommissioning the country’s copper network for some time, so this project was a high priority for the region’s four district health boards, Northland District Health Board, Waitematā District Health Board, Auckland DHB and Counties Manukau Health. As a result, they now have a modern, fit-for-purpose digital network that's scalable to allow for future growth and demand. 

The complex project was led by healthAlliance in collaboration with the DHBs, Black Box and their suppliers Vocus and Oracle Communications.
