CiLN Advisory Panel Update – July 2021

Sunday, 4 July 2021

NEWS – CiLN Advisory Panel member Nathan Billing

CiLN Advisory Panel member Nathan BillingThe excitement continues to build … following on from Alex’s post last month, we have had some significant developments within our sector the past month.

The Cyberattack at Waikato District Health Board has really highlighted how critical IT systems are in Health Care. The 2012 budget has indicated Government will be funding up to $385 million over the next four years (and a further $15 million in capital funding in 2025/26), for health sector digital infrastructure and capability.

We also have commitment towards funding for Hira, formerly known as the National Health Information Platform. These changes combined with the unification of the district health boards within the country, provide us with the catalyst and impetuous for change. The proposed transformational programs should pick up this month, as the interim agencies are set up and the real work begins. We will start to see the real work begin in the next few months and if you are not already involved with CiLN, now is a great time to do so.

Following on from our last meeting we had established a number of working groups to ensure Clinical informatics has a clear voice, as reforms progress. These groups are as follows:

I know that at this time of year we are all frantically busy with winter pressures and the recent financial year end. But if you want to contribute to the future of our health IT system there is no better time to get involved. We have the funding and a commitment to make the changes needed and we need to make the most of them, so get involved and join the discussion. The working groups’ reporting structure to the Advisory Board, accountability to the wider network and value to the network were discussed at our advisory panel meeting on 7 July.

If you would like to get more involved and join the CiLN advisory panel, nominations for the panel will open on 1st September with elections held during October.

If you know of any clinicians within our community doing great work in health IT,  nominations are open for the CiLN award. It is a great opportunity to recognise people that are adding value to our community, nominations close on 19 August. Three judges have been confirmed, they are Shayne Hunter, Lara Hopley and Becky George. If you have any questions about the award, please contact Nic at sector@hinz.org.nz.

Last but not least, we have updated our CiLN page on the HiNZ website, making it easier to navigate and find information. If you are having trouble finding anything, please contact Nic at sector@hinz.org.nz

If you would like to provide feedback on this update, please contact the editor Rebecca McBeth.
