The mental health sector is an unlikely place to go hunting for business opportunities. But as a highly values-driven, socially conscious and passionate leader, Anil Thapliyal did exactly that.

Growing a sustainable business was no easy feat; it required unrelenting perseverance, patience and a commitment to playing the long game. Fortunately, improving the mental health and wellbeing of New Zealanders is a life-long cause for Thapliyal.

“It’s certainly not easy to strike a balance as a business, especially on the bottom line,” Thapliyal says, “but the real reward is knowing we are making a difference in people’s lives every single day.”

Thapliyal, the founder and CEO of HealthTRx, has led the organisation from humble beginnings in 2006 to a globally respected leader in the eMental health field. Its aim is to leverage digital technologies to resolve the global mental illness crisis.

HealthTRx’s service suite spans eMental health consultancy services, products and software solutions. From preventative self-help programmes through to helping the healthcare sector deliver eMental health services more effectively, HealthTRx touches the lives of thousands of people globally.

Key clients include health ministries, mental health commissions, mental health service providers, hospitals, primary care practices and NGOs across New Zealand, Australia, USA and Canada.

“Winning three prestigious Indian Business Awards is a great honour,” says Thapliyal.

“The Special Award for Distinguished Services to eMental Health Globally is a testament to our mantra that 1+1=11, with us punching well above our weight despite our humble size.”

The award for Business Excellence in Innovation speaks to the people-centred approach to everything HealthTRx does.

“Innovation starts and ends with people,” he says.

By building a diverse team with a wide range of skills, Thapliyal orchestrates projects where staff challenge and support each other to surface new ideas. As such, HealthTRx is renowned for delivering innovative, outside-the-box thinking to explore how technology strengthen and is a supportive adjunct to traditional clinical interventions that improves the quality of people’s mental health and wellbeing.

Thapliyal is truly excited about the difference his team is making for people facing real-life challenges.

To be successful, HealthTRx must hold true to their ethical principles and the ethos of doing the right things for the right reasons. The award for Business Excellence in Ethics makes Thapliyal immensely proud that his people-centred approach has been recognised.

“We work with people to ensure that initiatives are implemented in ways that truly meet their needs. Our end-users are often in a very challenging place and success can be the difference between life and death – so they rightfully expect eMental health services to well designed, carefully delivered and increasingly integrated into routine care pathways.”
