Pegasus Health is reviewing its continued development of its Sirius patient management system, as changes in the market affect the system’s potential viability.
“Since the project began there has been a marked change in market conditions. General practices now have more options available to them and while this competitive environment is positive for practices, it has impacted on the viability and the size of the market for Sirius within Canterbury, and other potential markets,” Pegasus CEO Vince Barry said.
Pegasus recently undertook an independent review of the Sirius programme, which indicated that the projected market share available for a Pegasus-driven option was no longer viable, he said.
“It is therefore our intention to cease the development and sale of the Sirius product, subject to a consultation process with affected staff,” Barry said.
Pegasus would continue to provide support to practices currently using the Sirius product.
“If we determine that we are going to discontinue our development of Sirius, we will then explore how best to provide support in a multi-vendor environment.
“We would continue to advocate to ensure that the PMS options available to our network deliver to the needs of general practice, meet the requirements of the New Zealand health system, provide consistent information and can be supported by Pegasus,” he said.
“We believe the intention to cease the Sirius programme is prudent and demonstrates deliberate decision making.
“We will be conducting a review of the project's systems and processes for further learnings. Should we cease to develop the Sirius product, we will undertake an analysis to see what value can be retained from the development work undertaken to date,” he said.
“The number of redundancies will depend on the outcome of the staff consultation process. Affected staff are my first priority. Until we have consulted fully with then, we are not in a position comment further,” Barry said.
