oDocs Eye Care, a New Zealand social enterprise with a mission to end preventable blindness, has won the US$100,000 Dubai World Expo Live Innovation Impact Grant.

This is the 4th cycle of the Expo Live programme, with more than 4,800 applications from over 190 countries.

Only 51 companies throughout the cohort won the prize of US$100,000 each. oDocs is the first and only New Zealand company in this cycle.

The grant will be used to expand the R&D team here locally to enhance the capabilities of the company's smartphone-based eye-care devices.

The company is working on incorporating artificial intelligence (MedicMind) capabilities as a decision support tool to all its diagnostic devices.

oDocs is also seeking help from government agencies such as Callaghan Innovation to support new research post-doctorate graduates through its R&D career grant.
