The Ministry of Health has invited comments on SNOMED reference sets for consistent recording of chief presenting complaint, diagnosis and procedure information in emergency care.

The Ministry is moving towards improved recording of emergency department visits by district health boards. As a key part of this, standard SNOMED CT reference sets are being introduced to document chief presenting complaint, diagnosis and procedure/investigation concepts in emergency care.

Over the past four years, Nelson-Marlborough DHB has demonstrated the value of SNOMED in its ED at a Glance system, which allows clinicians to capture much better information than previously about patients and their reasons for visiting ED. Standards and systems like this will help DHBs to know more about how their services are used and to fill an acute care data vacuum.

The closing date for submissions is 5.00 pm, Friday 15 June 2018.
