Dr Fruhling leads a research team focused on researching, evaluating and implementing technical solutions for a public health emergency response information system that is affordable, robust, secure and usable. Through this they have lowered some of the barriers to entrance in healthcare using information technology and we have made in-roads into what are sometimes sacred environments, hospital networks. Today, 65 emergency response information systems, called STATPack™, connect rural and metropolitan hospitals laboratories to three state public health laboratories. STATPack is a secure image and text messaging system that supports the exchange of critical laboratory information. The image capture technology supports both macroscopic and microscopic imaging. It provides remote and immediate consultation between subject matter experts and those on the front lines through internal paging and alert systems. These systems communicate within their own state networks plus share important public health information across state lines. This nationally recognised project has made a direct impact on the quality of life for rural citizens and patients. Dr Fruhling will present key features of STATPack and a live demonstration. She will discuss critical design considerations for the system, the usability studies that ensured the system met the users’ needs, and how the system is evolving to the next generation of mobile technology.
