Synopsis

The e-Patient’s View of Patient Engagement

A social revolution has been growing since the 1990s: e-Patients – patients who are empowered, engaged, equipped, enabled. They’re enabled especially by access to information, about their health status (e-health), their diseases, treatment options, and (sometimes controversially) advice from online patient communities. Ten years ago I nearly died of Stage IV kidney cancer, and was cured in less than a year thanks to excellent care aided by advice from expert patients online (which my oncologist believes helped me survive) and access to my health data in hospital.

What’s going on here? How has the world changed, such that real value can be found online? And if it’s true, dare we discourage it?

In the past two years I’ve also reversed my pre-diabetes, losing 20kg via a behaviour change course and e-health apps. Seems to me this is worth developing!

"e-Patient Dave" deBronkart is the world's best-known advocate for "e-patients": empowered, engaged, equipped, enabled patients who are full and active partners with their health care professionals - especially empowered by information. A longtime member of online communities, in 2007 Dave beat Stage IV kidney cancer with the help of an expert patient community recommended by his doctor, and has gone on to become an international keynote speaker about "participatory medicine" at over 500 events in 15 countries. His TED Talk "Meet e-Patient Dave" went viral and for years was in the top half of the most-viewed talks ever. He's appeared in Time, U.S. News, USA Today, Wired, MIT Technology Review, and the HealthLeaders magazine cover story “Patient of the Future.” In 2009 HealthLeaders named him and his doctor to their annual list of “20 People Who Make Healthcare Better;" the National Library of Medicine is capturing his blog in America's History of Medicine, and he was the Mayo Clinic's 2015 Visiting Professor in Internal Medicine.
