Professor Siaw-Teng Liaw

Professor Liaw is an academic GP with published expertise in mixed methodologies including case studies, qualitative methods, general and vignette surveys, and controlled studies including pre-and-post, post- test-only and randomised controlled trials. He is an internationally recognised general practice and informatics practitioner, educator and researcher as indicated by invited publications, conference presentations, consultancies, professional committees, and peer-review panels for competitive grants and scientific conferences. He has received research support from the Australian NHMRC and ARC, governments and research foundations for his R&D programs in patient-held health records, multidisciplinary care, general practice and integrated care informatics and clinical decision support, focused on chronic disease (especially diabetes and asthma), quality use of medicines, mental health, and cross-cultural and Aboriginal health.
Professor Liaw established the electronic practice based research network (ePBRN) of primary and secondary care health information systems in SW Sydney. This has created a data repository of pseudonymised cohort of virtual patients, regularly updated for use as a living laboratory to conduct cohort controlled studies of health services interventions in an integrated health neighbourhood. His publications on information and business process modelling have improved understanding of asthma and falls prevention. His publications on EHR-based data analytics and data quality has contributed to the international knowledge base.
He has strong networks with local health districts/networks (LHD) and primary health networks (PHN) and state departments to facilitate the sustained translation of his research into policy and service models. He is engaged with the RACGP and Regional GP Training Programs to contribute to training the new generation of GP academic clinicians.
Nationally, he chairs the RACGP National Research and Evaluation Ethics Committee, an NHMRC-accredited human research committee. His research translation activities are/were facilitated through committees of government programs such as MedicineInsight, MediConnect, HealthConnect and the National Electronic Decision Support Taskforce. He has contributed to the National Prescribing Service, RACGP and AMA policies on eHealth.
Professor Liaw is also Director, AUS-92 WHO Collaborating Centre on eHealth; Co-Chair of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) Primary Care Informatics Working Group; and a member of the American Medical Informatics Association Ethics Committee.and IMIA Academy Taskforce. He works closely with the Asian eHealth Information Network, leading and mentoring the Research Group.
He is an Associate Editor of the Int J Med Informatics, J Innov Health Informatics. He reviews for JAMIA, JMIR, BMC Medical Informatics & Decision Making, Fam Pract, BMJ, BJGP, JANZPH, AMA, AFP, AJPH and many national and international scientific conferences.
