Biography

Dr. Roy Smythe
Chief Medical Officer
Global Connected Care & Healthcare Informatics Philips

As a physician, innovator, strategist and author, Roy has deep clinical knowledge and a wealth of experience in leading clinical and technological innovation programs supporting integrated health systems in their transition to value‐based care.

In his role as Chief Medical Officer for CC&HI, Roy’s clinical and business knowledge ensures Philips informatics solutions support customer requirements for optimized care paths and improved patient outcomes. His personal goal has always been to contribute to meaningful change in healthcare delivery.

Roy became part of the Philips team in 2016. Prior to Philips, He held the position of Chief Medical Officer at Valence Health, a U.S.‐based value‐based care technology and service provider, and was formerly Chief Medical Officer at Avia, a provider‐led healthcare technology accelerator – both based in Chicago.

He is the former Medical Director for Innovation for Baylor Scott & White Healthcare (2011) – an integrated delivery system. Prior to this he was The Roney Endowed Chair and tenured Professor of Surgery, Medicine and Molecular Medicine (2006), and also Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Baylor Scott & White Health System and for the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine (2004) – the most comprehensive health science center in Texas. He began his clinical career as a surgeon and tenured translational scientist at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Roy compliments these distinctions with a ‘Certificate of Innovation and Strategy’ from the MIT Sloan School of Business.

He is also author of more than 300 papers, abstracts, and essays in academic, literary, and humanities, with recent publication in Modern Healthcare, DISCOVER Magazine, Forbes Healthcare, and Pharma Panel as well as the LinkedIn Healthcare Channel. Roy is an invited lecturer in local, regional, national and international academic, business and technology forums.

Roy studied Biology at Baylor University, Waco, Texas, and a Doctor of Medicine (M.D., cum laude) from Texas A&M University School of Medicine, College Station, Texas.

He is recognized for professional membership in more than 20 national learned societies, including tenure as Texas Governor of the American College of Surgeons.
