Synopsis

#WeThe15 - creating a truly inclusive society

Duane will talk about how sport is being used to drive inclusion and breaking down the barriers surrounding disability. He will share some of his own personal experiences with his acquired disability following the removal of a spinal tumour and how perceptions and prejudices influence how people with a disability are often engaged with.

Duane is an experienced leader, at both international and domestic level, within the corporate and sporting sectors.  Having recently concluded his banking career to focus on board governance, he has held senior management roles at ANZ Bank.  Alongside this professional career, Duane has significant experience in working at leadership and governance levels in sport.  He led Paralympic Games teams to Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Paralympic Games and presently holds a board position with the International Paralympic Committee as Vice President. Domestically, Duane serves on the board of Sport NZ and Paralympics New Zealand.

Duane is a successful Paralympic swimmer (Paralympian #96). His extensive commercial and sporting experience is complemented by his perspective as a Paralympic athlete and a person with an acquired disability. His strong leadership attributes are demonstrated across sport and business in culture, change management, decision-making, regulatory and compliance management, and collaboration with stakeholders.  He has a wide range of governance skills which focus on governance, risk assessment and management, strategic planning, financial oversight and international relations.
