Dr Mariam Parwaiz is a Public Health Medicine Trainee with the New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine, and, as part of the training programme, is currently studying towards a Master of Public Health at the University of Auckland. She is also the Deputy Chair of the New Zealand Medical Association’s Doctors-in-Training Council.


She gained her medical degree (MB ChB) from the University of Otago, and after graduation worked as a house officer in a range of medical and surgical specialities at Canterbury District Health Board. She is passionate about global public health, and her broad interests include the social determinants of health, non-communicable diseases, health systems, medical education, and leadership in health.
She believes that social media can be an effective tool for medical education and networking with people from around the world. She volunteers as the Social Media Coordinator for a movement called Women in Global Health, which calls for gender equity in global health leadership. She is active on Twitter and has been a Twitter Panellist for The Nation, TV3’s politics and current affairs show. She can be found on Twitter @MariamParwaiz.
