Clinicians' Challenge 2011
What is the Clinicians’ Challenge?
The Clinicians’ Challenge is an opportunity for clinicians and vendors to work together to use information technology to solve an important and recurring problem that health professionals face in their ‘day-to-day” practice.
What is the purpose of the challenge?
The Challenge aims to promote the use of information technology in health. We want to encourage more clinicians to become interested in technology and we want vendors further develop their understanding of clinical requirements. We want to support the development of IT systems that help us to work smarter and improve patient outcomes.
Who runs it?
The Challenge is supported by Health Informatics New Zealand (HINZ), the New Zealand Health IT Cluster and the National Health IT Board (Health IT Board).
Who can enter?
Clinicians have presented the challenge by putting forward 56 problems they face in their day-to-day practice that the innovative use of information technology could help solve. This year we have chosen the three most interesting.
Now is the opportunity for vendors to respond. We’d like you to choose one of these three challenges and tell us about your concept or solution to solve the problem.
All vendors are invited to participate. Submissions can be made by individual vendors or groups.
Making a submission?
Submissions should be a Word document, no longer than 8 pages. Please e-mail it to admin@hinz.org.nz by 3pm on 31 October 2011. There will be no extensions.
Shortlisted vendors will be advised by Friday 14th November.
The selected vendors, and the clinicians who put forward the successful case, will be required to give a 7 minute presentation to the judges at the HINZ Conference at 3.30 pm, Thursday 24th November at the Aotea Centre, Auckland.
How will the submissions be judged?
The judging panel for the Challenge includes representatives from HINZ, the National Information Clinical Leadership Group (an advisory group to the Health IT Board), the Health IT Cluster and a consumer representative.
Vendor solutions will be judged on:
- Innovation (30%)
- Feasibility - value for money, acceptability to those involved, seeming entirely possible and thought through. (30%)
- Potential health outcome benefit (20%)
- Effective use of health workforce (20%)
Vendor solutions should be able to be integrated with current health systems and technologies.
At this stage there will be no further information distributed regarding the cases. So feel free to make assumptions as necessary.
The winner will be announced, and judges will present certificates to the winner and two runners up, at the HINZ dinner on Thursday 24th November at the Civic Wintergarden, Auckland.

How long has the Clinicians’ Challenge been running?
This is the second year of the Clinicians’ Challenge. Last year’s event was valuable in improving clinician engagement in health information technology, and it's only just the beginning.
Last year, the judging panel also identified some health IT solutions, including some in the National Health IT Plan, that could assist or solve some of the problems raised by clinicians.
Who won in 2010?
The winning problem case in 2010 came from a colorectal cancer care nursing service that 'wants to ensure a seamless and timely interface between hospital and community-based continued care and social support systems'. The winning vendor, Orion Health, is working with the clinician to develop a system and expects to have it completed by the end of this year.
