HINZ Conference and Exhibition 30 Sept - 2 Oct 2009
Closing comments from the SPC Chair
I'm very pleased to say a very big thank-you to all the people who made HINZ 2009 a success: Linda and her team of course, the people who came and listened, the people who presented and especially the SPC.
It’s a little bit odd being on the programme committee - you’ve pretty much finished your work by the time the conference comes around and you don’t always get to see the papers you reviewed being presented. Highlights for me were the presentations by the invited speakers especially the Jims and Johanna, Ron’s talk, and the real effort by everyone to put patients at the centre of their work. I think the quality of the scientific presentations justified the effort put in by both presenters and reviewers.
I’ll be inviting presenters of the scientific papers to prepare their papers for publication in HCIRO - December edition , but many of the other papers would also be of interest to our readership and I hope that some of the more general and practice–based papers can also get published – perhaps using some of the support we have from the ministry to pay for the extra work needed.
One aspect that really impresses me is the degree to which there really is something for everyone at HINZ, its lucky in a way because the NZ Health Informatics community is very small, and we would get sick of hearing just from each other. The History of HINZ especially all the work done by Robyn Carr and past SPC'ers has kept that inclusiveness and continued to keep HINZ relevant. Health IT is at the heart of so much clinical work, and a major industry in its own right, so having a place for those conversations is vital.
We can always improve. There was certainly a call for more time - especially more time for questions- so we might well have to look at the programme for next year, similarly the posters may need to move somewhere closer to coffee, I’m sure there will be other areas for improvement and feel very free to contact me or the exec about any ideas you have.
See you in wellington next year if not before.
-- David Parry, Chair of the Scientific Programme Committee
