What does success look like?

With the allure of computerised health informatics, billions and billions of dollars have already been spent and yet we continue to argue among ourselves. What is better? Who is right? I’d suggest that if we’re still arguing so much, then nobody is “right”. Practically, we’ve seen many failures. What keeps going wrong? What are the barriers that repeatedly keep us from achieving what we want—successful health IT projects? Perhaps the problem lies in the questions we are asking, or not asking?

During this talk I will share with you my personal beliefs about where the issues with healthcare are, and where and why we have so many problems with our computerisation of healthcare. I will explore the important question of what success will look like, and focus on where I believe health information technology can help. I won’t offer magic, but a personal viewpoint with an open invitation to participate in further discussion and exploration.

I am certain of just one thing—our need to share among and educate one another, bridging the gaps between our personal viewpoints to the advantage of all.
