Technology as an enabler in clinical practice - a journey of discovery

The New Zealand health services are being actively advanced into e health by the Health Minister who has requested we move as a country into a digital health environment.

Two of the points from the Ministry of Healths eHealth visions state;
- ‘Information will be recorded in digital formats throughout the health system.’
- 'Information improvements will be prioritised to enable clinicians to optimise their resources (time, facilities and equipment) and focus on the delivery of quality health care.’

It is vitally important that nurses rise to this challenge and embrace all that this new technology offers and learn what is possible and how it can enable their clinical practice and improve outcomes for their patients.

Deb will share some of her experience introducing technology into clinical practice describing the experience of the team that was completely paper based with very traditional methods of clinical practice embracing the change required to manage clinical practice within a fully digitally integrated hospital. Deb will demystify some of the terminology and discuss the importance of nursing leadership on systems design and culture change.

Deb Boyd has just returned to New Zealand after a stint in Australia where she was the General Manager at Australia's first fully integrated digital hospital: St Stephens opened in Hervey Bay (a green field site) in October 2014 and achieved HIMSS Level 6 in November 2014. "This was a thrilling project to be part of and experience such incredible technology with a fully functioning EMR and closed loop medication management system. It was a privilege to see firsthand the patients and staff's experiences as they transitioned from old ways of doing things to successfully using new technology."

Since returning to NZ, Deb is really encouraged to see the progress being made with electronic health records and systems integration. "I am completely inspired by what is possible and am keen to see the work of HINZ succeed. There is so much still to be done and I am passionately keen to see system integration and clinical informatics being used to transform healthcare outcomes for patients."

Deb's background is nursing, business and management. She has worked for the Canterbury DHB managing Child Health Services and more recently for Southern Cross Hospitals both in Christchurch and in Wellington where she was their Hospital Manager for 7.5 years.

Deb's governance experience includes time on the inaugural board of Partnership Health PHO under the chair of Dame Ann Hercus as it was established. Deb has career experience in clinical, leadership, operational management, systems improvement, culture development, change management and eHealth.

Deb has set up her own consultancy in eHealth and has more recently joined Auckland Eye as their CEO.
