What's the difference between transition and

Nine points in the Scrabble Score calculator. Actually, transition is a term that means get across - to go from one state to another. A transformation is a fundamental change from one structure to another. Kinda like the health sector, kinda like HINZ.

Last year, I shared information about the transitional state of HINZ - a long-standing organisation in the NZ health sector. It was time to assess how HINZ was meeting the needs of its members. We had many discussions with our partners, the National Health IT Board, the Health IT Cluster and Health Informatics Association of Australia (HISA), to name a few. We also reached out to a number of groups in the clinical, academic, commercial and administrative branches of the NZ health sector.  We conducted a member survey and finally, we did an audit of our internal systems and capabilities. This helped us get across from the state of what HINZ has been to the vision of what HINZ needed to be.We clarified what our members were asking for and what HINZ could and should provide to collaborate, advocate and educate for the value that health informatics brings to the NZ health sector.

This is a transformational year for HINZ. The health sector has changed dramatically since HINZ's inception 14 years ago. We have many new and long-term members. Topics such as predictive analytics, self-management and the patient portal are more broadly developed than before, yet continue to change and influence how health care is delivered. The use of informatics to drive better health outcomes in NZ is the primary focus of HINZ, and the organisation needed a leader to ensure the delivery of this vision.

This year, the HINZ Executive has appointed its first ever CEO, Kim Mundell. Kim has senior level experience in growing organisations in the health sector. Kim is enthusiastic about the transformation of HINZ into the health informatics professional organisation that is needed to support the New Zealand health sector.  Please join me, and the entire HINZ Executive Committee, in welcoming Kim. Expect to hear from her in the coming weeks.

Last week we sent the annual membership invoice to our financial members. It is your participation which enables HINZ to provide a balanced platform for collaboration. Please pay your invoice promptly - if you have not received an invoice please contact us and remember to mark your diary for this year's HINZ Conference in Auckland, Monday-Wednesday, 10-12 November.
