Government and law enforcement agencies estimate that fraudulent claims cost health care payers as much as $170 billion per year. This would likely worsen with use of EHR. Dr David Brailer, US National Health IT Coordinator said: “The prevailing view in the industry has been that the adoption of electronic records will increase the opportunities for fraud and I.D. theft.” His department has commissioned two studies to identify "methods we can take to start preventing fraud at the doctors’ desktop and how we can respond to the threat of cyberfraud during this transition from paper to electronic health." The reports which were released on 17 October call for "the adoption of automated coding applications as well as the use of data profiling, advanced analytic and rank scoring tools to detect fraud"
